Heteromeles arbutifolia commonly known as toyon, is a common perennial shrub native to extreme southwest Oregon, California and Baja California. Pretty sure Compton is considered the most dangerous city in California. It inhabits a variety of open and semi-open areas, including subtropical forests, shrublands, pastures, and deserts.

Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 11 h 47 min to complete.

One subspecies, the Palos Verdes Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus palosverdesensis), is a endangered blue butterfly native to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in southwest Los Angeles County, California. Toyon is a prominent component of the coastal sage scrub plant community, and is a part of drought-adapted chaparral and mixed oak woodland habitats.
